In the fall of 2024, conservative families had a major win in the Supreme Court. With a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court decided adding LGBTQ+ inclusive books to elementary English classes without an opt-out option was in violation of parents’ First Amendment right to freely exercise religion.
The Mahmoud v. Taylor decision came after schools in Montgomery County, MD, added these books to their English classes. At first, there was an opt-out option but it quickly disappeared to prevent stigma and class disruptions. The Supreme Court made their decision, which has rang across the country and applies to all public schools. Moreover, it applies to more than LGBTQ+ books. It impacts any content that meets the religious burden test.
This was a major win for the small and rural school districts that range across Oregon’s vast countryside. As we watch how decisions are made on our behalf with frustration, knowing those making the decisions hold different values and face different challenges, we can be encouraged by wins like this.
While we won this battle, though, the war is far from over. This is a fight for our society and children’s wellbeing. It is a push to protect innocence and promote proper development through adolescence without the pressure of inappropriate materials.
Fights like these are why CSBO exists. We believe school boards and parents must partner to ensure safe, healthy learning environments that reflect community values. If you want to make your voice heard, join us and make a difference.
